Last night I did something I have been meaning to do for 3 years. Something that only took 2 hours but could save my children’s lives…
When my friend offered to host a baby & children’s first aid course at her house, I jumped at the chance. While I am an expert at applying sticky plasters and dishing out Calpol (how I wish I had invented that stuff), I am lucky enough to never have found myself in a situation that has required anything more serious. I have often wondered how I would cope in a choking, or bad burn incident, with my limited first aid knowledge, and every time vowed to book myself on a course asap.
I am so glad I did! The evening was relaxed and enjoyable, as well as knowledgeable. 8 of us gathered at my friend’s house for a few nibbles and drinks, before Claire, our Mini First Aid trainer, showed us all the basics. She used a range of lifelike props , including very realistic dummies of different ‘ages’ to allow us to practice and ensure we were confident using different life saving techniques. I was also able to purchase a comprehensive first aid kit at the end of the evening for a very reasonable £10.
Speaking to the other girls there, I realized just how common the emergency situations we covered on the course are, with many of them having already having to deal with them with their own little ones.
Should you attend one of these courses?
If the answer to any of these questions is NO, then absolutely!!
- Do you know how and when to correctly perform CPR on babies and children?
- Do you know how to correctly treat burns?
- Do you know what to do if your child is choking?
- Do you know how to recognise and treat shock?
- Do you know how to treat bumps, bleeding and broken bones?
- Do you know what a febrile seizure is and how to treat it?
- Do you know how to spot signs of meningitis
At the end of the evening, I left feeling much more equipped to deal with life with a VERY active toddler and a soon to be new born baby. I urge you all to do it.
Claire holds private classes in the comfort of your own home for only £20 per person (min 6 people). The classes are suitable for parents, grandparents or carers and pre-crawling babies are welcome to attend.
